Gastropod mollusks are part of the principal marine resources cultivated and commercialized in Chile. There are native Chilean species such as loco (Concholepas concholepas), locate (Thais chocolata), trumulco snail (Chorus giganteus), keyhole limpets (Fissurella spp.), tegula snail (Tegula atra) as well as exotic species such as red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) and Japanese abalone (Haliotis discus hannai). Despite their importance as marine resources, molecular genetic studies establishing phylogenetic relationships and estimating population genetic parameters are scarce. Description of a new species of skate of the genus Malacoraja Stehmann, 1970: the first species from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, with notes on generic monophyly and composition (Chondrichthyes: Rajidae) Neotropical Ichthyology

The first report of a western South Atlantic soft skate, genus Malacoraja Stehmann, 1970, is described as Malacoraja obscura, new species, from the southeastern Brazilian continental slope off the states of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, in depths ranging from 808-1105 m. The new species is known from five specimens and is distinguished from congeners by its unique dorsal coloration with small, faded white spots on disc and pelvic fins, by retaining in larger specimens an irregular row of thorns along dorsal midline of tail (extending from tail base to two-thirds of tail length in 680 mm total length female), and by presenting a ventral tail midline devoid of small denticles only at base (naked region not extending posterior to pelvic fin rear margin)....

ABSTRACT The nominal species Calomys tener (Winge, 1887) ranges broadly in open lands of the Caatinga, Cerrado, Pantanal and Mata Atlântica of Brazil, and was recently reported from the Pampas of southern Brazil, and in the Selva Paranaense of eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina. This rodent can be infected with the pathogenic Araraquara hantavirus in Brazil. The genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in the genus Secale L. (rye) was evaluated using 24 Secale cereale microsatellite (SCM) markers. The average polymorphism information content (PIC) value of each microsatellite locus in 30 Secale accessions evaluated was higher than that in 47 cultivated ryes (Secale cereale ssp. cereale). The mean genetic similarity (GS) index in Secale was lower than that in cultivated rye. The highest within-species GS index was observed for S. sylvestre and the lowest for S. strictum, whereas the highest between-species GS index was found between S. cereale and S. vavilovii and the lowest between S. sylvestre and S. cereale. Genetic diversity of begomovirus infecting tomato and associated weeds in Southeastern Brazil Trop. Plant Pathol.

The genetic diversity of begomovirus isolates from tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) fields in the Southeastern region of Brazil was analyzed by direct sequencing of PCR fragments amplified by using universal oligonucleotides for the begomovirus DNA-A, and subsequent computer-aided phylogenetic analysis. Samples of tomato plants and associated weeds showing typical symptoms of virus infection were collected at seven locations in the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. A total of 137 out of 369 samples were infected with a begomovirus based on PCR analysis. Karyotypic studies in wild species of Arachis (Leguminosae) belonging to sections Erectoides, Procumbentes and Rhizomatosae Boletín de la Sociedad

Karyotypes of three diploid species belonging to sections Erectoides (Arachis hermannii), Procumbentes (A. rigonii) and Rhizomatosae (A. burkartii) were analyzed by Feulgen's technique. The karyotype formula was different in each of the taxa analyzed: 2n=2x=16m+4sm in A. hermannii, 2n=2x=18m+2sm in A. rigonii, and 2n=2x=20m in A. burkartii. All species had a pair of satellited chromosomes, which corresponded to type 2 in A. hermannii, type 9 in A. rigonii, and type 8 in A. burkartii. Arachis hermannii and A. rigonii presented chromosomal features similar to those of the other species included in their respective sections. However, A. burkartii showed chromosome characteristics different from those found in the rest of the species of section Rhizomatosae.

Micropotamia, gen.n. of neotropical muscidae (Diptera, Azeliinae), with comments on allied azeliini genera Zoologia

A new genus, Micropotamia, is erected for Phaonia minuscula Albuquerque, 1955 [type-species of the genus], Phaonia cilitibia Albuquerque, 1955 and Azelia amazonica Albuquerque & Lopes, 1982. A key to these three species is given. The female of Micropotamia amazonica is described for the first time, from Roraima. Some character-states of phylogenetic importance and affinities with world Azeliini genera are discussed. Megophyra Emden, 1965 and Potamia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 are considered to be most closely related to Micropotamia, gen.n.

Scanning electron microscopy of acrothoracican cypris larvae (Crustacea, Thecostraca, Cirripedia, Acrothoracica, Lithoglyptidae) Naturalis

Scanning electron microscopy was used to provide a full morphological description of cypris morphology in the acrothoracican species Lithoglyptes milis and L. habei (Lithoglyptidae). Special attention was given to lattice organs, antennules, thorax, thoracopods, abdomen, and furcal rami. Cypris larvae of the Acrothoracica share some putative plesiomorphic features with the cypris-like ascothoracid larvae of the non-cirripede taxon Ascothoracida. The most notable are traces of abdominal segmentation and carapace lattice organs without pore fields. Acrothoracican cyprids also share numerous synapomorphies with those of the Thoracica and the Rhizocephala. The species, a small herring-like fish from relictual West African streams, is the most primitive living clupeomorph and sole Recent representative of suborder Denticipitoidei.
